About Us

Flying Spares, A Brief History

February 1995 - Flying Spares was established by Ben and Lucy Handford from a humble portacabin on Lucy’s, parents’ business premises in Leicestershire. In the following decade, Flying Spares slowly gained momentum, developing a growing customer base and beginning to build a small team who, in the early years were often asked to strip parts, advise customers, and pick and pack parcels.

June 2006 - As the business grew, Flying Spares began to run out of room to stock an ever-growing range of parts. A move to Rossendale House in Market Bosworth gave the company plenty of space to store parts and create a sister company focused on Rolls-Royce and Bentley servicing and restoration. This was instrumental in building a customer base and technical knowledge, which eventually evolved into our Technical Service Department, responsible for testing vehicles, parts, and reconditioning core units.

March 2013 - Flying Spares completed the purchase of one of its main competitors, Montague and Company, dramatically increasing the stock of both new and recycled parts.

February 2020 - After trading for 25 years, Ben and Lucy announced that Flying Spares would become an Employee-Owned company. Selling 100% of their shares in the business to a newly formed Employee-Owned Trust, Ben, and Lucy’s key objective was to ensure the continued success of Flying Spares.

October 2024 - Almost 30 years after its inception and with a team of over 50, Flying Spares moved to a purpose-built facility in Leicestershire. Almost doubling their footprint to 60,000 square feet of offices, workshops, and warehousing.

Quality Control

The Quality Control Department is a key part of our business. Since 1995, we have tried to offer the widest choice of parts for all post-war models without compromising the quality and reliability of those parts. All newly introduced parts will go through our QC department to be thoroughly tested on-site to original Rolls-Royce & Bentley standards, these parts will be road-tested where required. New parts will only be made available once they have passed our Quality Control. Engineers are on hand to advise on all quality related matters and every issue will be thoroughly investigated.

In-House Reconditioning

Our in-house reconditioned components are recovered genuine parts that have been thoroughly serviced and rebuilt by our Technical Services Department. Our aim is the sustainable preservation of original engineering. All units go through a comprehensive cleaning and rebuild process. Serviceable items are replaced with matching quality parts. We’re so confident in our procedures that Flying Spares reconditioned components come with a market-leading three-year warranty.

Recycling

We source and recycle post-1946 Rolls-Royce and Bentley motor cars to preserve as much original Rolls-Royce and Bentley engineering as possible. Many of the cars we buy will be sold for restoration, while others, that are beyond economical repair, are carefully dismantled. One recycled car can add 100’s of no longer available parts to our stock. Recycled parts will go through a series of processes, bringing them back to life before they are added to our inventory. Valuable core units can also be reclaimed during the process to our technical services team where they will be fully serviced and reconditioned, giving them a new lease of life. We supply recycled parts with a 12-month warranty.

Securing the Future

Our new home has doubled our previous footprint, allowing us to future-proof the business and bring all our operations under one roof. A larger sales office will allow us to expand the Flying Spares team, maintaining the level of service we are proud of. The new building also allows for a spacious customer reception area dedicated to the rich history of Rolls-Royce and Bentley vehicles. To meet growing demand, we have expanded our technical services, quality control, reconditioning, and recycling operations; increasing our capacity to add new, recycled, and reconditioned products to our portfolio. The warehouse holds more stock and product lines, as we increase our off-the-shelf availability for Heritage and Modern Rolls-Royce and Bentley vehicles.
